Chiang Mai is often considered as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Thailand. It is the largest and most cul-turally significant city in Northern Thailand. There is a vast array of food cultures, ranging from Northern Thai cuisine to Indian, Burmese, Italian, French, Yunnan, Chinese and German. For those wishing to venture out at night there is a lively night scene, with roof top bars overlooking the city at Maya and many cultural restaurants along Ping River and in town and there is a popular street for nightlife for the youngsters at “Nimmanhemin Road”.

Chiang Mai is 700 km (435 mile) North of Bangkok, you can either travel by car , train or plane. Chiang Mai has an International airport which is Thailand's fourth largest airport, after Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) in Bangkok, and Phuket. Domestic flights operate from either Su-vanabhum International Airport or from Don Muang Airport with a flight time of about 1 hour. The air-port also operates regular International flights to a number of destinations.
Apart from travelling by air, for those of you that wish to travel a little more sedately there is a rail link with sleeping car facility that will take about 10- 12 hours, for those wishing to travel by car takes about 8 - 10 hours depend on how fast of your speed. If you wish to drive North to Chiang Rai it will take about 3.5 hours and approximately a further 1-2 hours further North to the Burmese border of Myanmar, this is called the “ Mae Sai Border”.
